Transporation

One of the great advantages of living in a mile-square city is the ease of getting around, whether by bike, public transit, personal vehicle, or as a pedestrian. I am committed to making all of these options more accessible and safe to all community members, regardless of age, disability status, or location in town.

Mobility

  • Broaden the focus of Vision Zero by including “near miss” data to better account for the close calls to support the data collection efforts to improve infrastructure.

    • Add a resident advisory board component to expand collaboration with the Transportation Department - no one knows our streets and sidewalks better than our residents.

  • Expand and simplify HOP routes and operations including weekend service to strengthen intra-city connectivity, especially for seniors, and expand hours of service.

    • At the holidays, work with the Hoboken Business Alliance to develop a route that highlights small businesses to encourage residents to shop local.

  • Tackle the threat posed to pedestrians by E-bikes by working with food delivery apps and using geofencing technology to identify and penalize drivers who repeatedly endanger others by riding on the sidewalk or against traffic.

    • Create a community space for Ebike delivery drivers that would provide restrooms, charging stations, and comfortable rest spaces to attract congregating to this shared space (rather than Washington Street) - paid for and sponsored by the delivery apps.

    • Continue to support community policing efforts to ensure increased visibility of police officers and code enforcement officers throughout Washington Street and downtown.

    • Work with the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office to address the need for regional solutions given that E-bike delivery drivers are not limited to just Hoboken.

    • Explore the option of creating a limit on the total number of E-bike delivery drivers per app.

  • Prioritize completion of the Green Circuit, a protected bike lane that provides a complete route around the perimeter of the City, and install additional bike racks throughout the city and especially in the commercial areas to make biking safer and more convenient.

  • Lobby New Jersey Transit for the construction of a new Light Rail station at 15th street while exploring financing options through development projects in Northwest Hoboken, and lobby for an additional 126 bus route running on Madison and Monroe to better serve residents on the west side.

  • Advocate with Port Authority for improved PATH service on nights and weekends, reduced wait times during off-peak hours on weekdays, and coordinate on necessary infrastructure projects to keep residents well informed.

  • Conduct a citywide inventory to identify poorly maintained sidewalks and work with property owners to address necessary repairs in a timely way.

Parking

  • Prioritize construction of two additional municipal garages - the current surface parking lot at 13th and Adams, and an additional site in the north end as part of a developer give back.

  • Incentivize car storage in municipal garages by reducing the monthly price for residents and expanding availability within existing garages through prioritizing repairs to the midtown garage, and developing a plan for updating the Garden Street garage to get back online.

  • Introduce varied permit pricing scheme based on vehicle size and frequency of usage (e.g., permit that only allows street parking on weekends).

  • Develop a permit buyback program to encourage alternative methods of transportation (PATH, NJ Transit, NY Waterway, Citibike, etc.).

  • Offer discounts on garage parking to those who keep cars parked for extended periods of time.

Streets

  • Improve transparency regarding planned improvements to street conditions through publishing a yearly schedule of blocks slated for repavement.

  • Increase advocacy and communication with County and State to ensure Hoboken receives its fair share of infrastructure spending, as well as sufficient notice ahead of planned County projects to coordinate with City projects.

  • Improve communication and responsiveness to residents on issues such as potholes or other roadside hazards by creating an app based ticketing system to allow residents to report in real time.

  • Advocate for regional improvement projects that improve access in and out of Hoboken, such as repaving of Jersey Avenue with Jersey City.

  • Lobby against projects such as the planned expansion of the New Jersey Turnpike, which would bring additional congestion and pollution to Hoboken and surrounding communities. Work with the state to instead prioritize safety improvements needed for the Extension and bridge sections of roadway.

Curbside Management

  • Change the culture of traffic violations on Washington Street by utilizing pilot data for violations captured via camera to issue automatic summonses for those violations. This program reduces the reliance on code enforcement officers, brings additional revenue to the City, and ensures that hazardous practices like double parking in bike lanes is being properly addressed.

  • Build upon the successes of Vision Zero by launching a Safe Routes program that will focus Transportation Department resources on how we can improve safety for kids traveling to school.

  • Expand use of loading zones throughout residential portions of the City to allow for safer placement of delivery vehicles and drop off areas for area residents.

  • Complete the curbside management study, organize a series of community engagement and education sessions to share findings, and work collaboratively with the City Council to determine which recommendations should be implemented.
